Assam
ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വടക്കുകിഴക്കൻ മേഖലയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് അസം. സമൃദ്ധമായ സംസ്കാരം, വിശാലമായ ചായത്തോട്ടങ്ങൾ, മഹത്തായ ബ്രഹ്മപുത്ര നദി, വനസമ്പത്ത്, എണ്ണശേഖരം, ജാതി-ഭാഷാ വൈവിധ്യം എന്നിവകൊണ്ട് അസം പ്രശസ്തമാണ്. സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ വിസ്തീർണം ഏകദേശം 78,438 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ ആണ്. 2025–2026 കാലയളവിൽ അസത്തിന്റെ ജനസംഖ്യ ഏകദേശം 3.6 മുതൽ 3.7 കോടി വരെ ആയി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
അസമിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനം ദിസ്പൂർ ആണ്. ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരം ഗുവാഹത്തിയാണ്. ഭൂട്ടാനും ബംഗ്ലാദേശും അതിർത്തി പങ്കിടുന്നതിനാൽ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വടക്കുകിഴക്കൻ മേഖലയിലെ തന്ത്രപ്രധാന സംസ്ഥാനമായും അസം പരിഗണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അസമിലെ നിലവിലെ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി Himanta Biswa Sarma ആണ്.
അസം മതപരവും സാംസ്കാരികവുമായ വൈവിധ്യത്തിന്റെ നാടാണ്. സെൻസസ് കണക്കുകൾ പ്രകാരം:
- ഹിന്ദുക്കൾ – ഏകദേശം 61.47%
- മുസ്ലിംകൾ – ഏകദേശം 34.22%
- ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികൾ – ഏകദേശം 3.74%
- മറ്റുള്ളവർ (ബുദ്ധമതക്കാർ, സിഖുകൾ, ജൈനർ, ആദിവാസി വിശ്വാസങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയവർ) – ഏകദേശം 0.57%
അസം സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് അസമീസ്, ബോഡോ, ബെംഗാളി, കാർബി, മിസിംഗ്, റാഭ, ഡിമാസ, ടീ ട്രൈബ് സമൂഹങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടെ നിരവധി ജാതി-വർഗ്ഗ വിഭാഗങ്ങൾ ജീവിക്കുന്നു. ഈ വൈവിധ്യം അസമിന്റെ സൌന്ദര്യമാണ്. എന്നാൽ ഭാഷ, കുടിയേറ്റം, സാമൂഹിക ഐക്യം, തിരിച്ചറിവ് തുടങ്ങിയ വിഷയങ്ങളിൽ ചില വെല്ലുവിളികളും നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു.

Assam
Assam is one of the most important states in Northeast India, known for its rich culture, tea gardens, mighty Brahmaputra River, forests, oil resources, and ethnic diversity. The state covers an area of about 78,438 square kilometers and has a projected population of around 3.6–3.7 crore people in 2025–2026.
The capital of Assam is Dispur, located in Guwahati, the largest city of the state. Assam shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh and is strategically important for India’s Northeast region.
Religion and People
Assam is religiously and culturally diverse. According to Census data:
- Hindus – approximately 61.47%
- Muslims – approximately 34.22%
- Christians – approximately 3.74%
- Others (Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains, tribal faiths and others) – around 0.57%
The state is home to many ethnic communities including Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, Karbi, Mishing, Rabha, Dimasa, Tea Tribe communities, and several tribal groups. This diversity makes Assam culturally beautiful, but it also creates challenges related to identity, migration, language, and social harmony.
Economic Status
Assam’s economy is mainly based on:
- Tea production (Assam tea is globally famous)
- Agriculture and rice cultivation
- Oil and natural gas
- Tourism and wildlife
- Handloom and bamboo industries
Despite its natural wealth, many parts of Assam still face economic struggles such as unemployment, annual flooding, infrastructure challenges, and rural poverty. Floods caused by the Brahmaputra River regularly affect thousands of families, damaging homes, crops, and livelihoods.
