History of Sharon Fellowship
Pastor P. J. Thomas (1915– 1988)
Pastor P. J. Thomas was born on April 15, 1915, at Puthenpura-Painummoottil, Mavelikkara, as the third son of Pastor P. V. John and Sosoamma. Raised in a Godly home, he inherited a deep commitment to the Scriptures and a passion for the advancement of the gospel.
After completing his early education, he pursued his Intermediate studies at S.B. College, Changanassery. Sensing God’s call to Christian ministry, he entered theological training and earned the Licentiate in Theology (L.Th.) from Serampore College, Kolkata, followed by the Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) from the United Theological College, Bangalore. Determined to prepare himself for effective ministry, he continued his theological education at Sydney Bible College, Australia, in 1946, and later pursued graduate studies in Canada and the United States. He received the Master of Religious Education (M.R.E.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) degrees from Wheaton College, Illinois. President V. Edmond Raymond granted Thomas a Theological Fellowship and then appointed him to teach at Wheaton College. In recognition of his significant contributions to theological education and Christian ministry, he was later awarded an honorary doctorate by a seminary in Pittsburgh.
On July 6, 1944, Pastor P. J. Thomas married Aleyamma of Madathilmeprath,
Mallappally. Their marriage became a remarkable partnership in ministry, as both shared an unwavering commitment to the Lord. Throughout their lives, Mrs. Thomas faithfully supported her husband’s vision through hospitality and prayer, becoming an indispensable partner.
In March 1953, Pastor P. J. Thomas returned to India with a clear vision for theological education and indigenous church planting. He purchased a residence in the heart of Tiruvalla and made it the center of a growing ministry. From this home, Pastor and Mrs. Thomas established the Sharon Bible Institute, which would later develop into today’s Sharon Bible College. Their residence soon became a place of prayer, biblical instruction, leadership development, and Christian fellowship. Soon, teachers,
students, and several local believers began meeting regularly for worship in the Sharon compound. This rapid movement gradually developed and became known as the Sharon Fellowship Church by year-end. This humble beginning later would expand across India and to many nations through church planting, theological education, missions, and evangelism.
Pastor P. J. Thomas and Mrs. Aleyamma Thomas were blessed with two sons, John Thomas and the late Kurien Thomas. Through a lifetime of faithful service, theological scholarship, and Spirit-led leadership, Pastor P. J. Thomas left an enduring legacy. His vision continues to influence students at Sharon Bible College and countless ministers in Sharon Fellowship Church. His life’s work remains a testimony to God’s faithfulness in raising servant leaders for the advancement of His Kingdom.
Sharon Fellowship Church
After completing his higher theological education at Wheaton College, Illinois, and teaching comparative religion there, Pastor P. J. Thomas returned to India in March 1953. He purchased a residential property in the heart of Thiruvalla and settled there with his wife, Aleyamma, who was also a graduate of a Bible college. In their home, they began a small Bible training program called the Sharon Bible Institute, which is now known as Sharon Bible College. Their vision of spreading the Good News of the Gospel was the driving force behind this initiative.
A small congregation consisting of teachers and students from the Bible school, along with a few local residents, and independent churches began meeting within the Sharon compound. This marked the beginning of the church movement known as Sharon Fellowship Church.
In December of the same year, American missionary Rev. M. A. Davoud and his wife arrived in Thiruvalla. After visiting their fried in Payippad near Tiruvalla they became acquainted with Pastor P. J. Thomas.They shared with Pastor Thomas a spiritual burden to organize revival meetings in Thiruvalla. That evening, meetings began at the Sharon premises. About fifty people, including teachers and students, attended the first gathering. As the powerful work of the Holy Spirit was experienced from the very first meeting, it was decided to continue the services for several more days. Increasing numbers of people attended these meetings daily.
As attendance grew beyond the available space, a large tent was erected within the Sharon compound to accommodate the crowds. During the final days of these 23-day revival meetings, more than 80,000 people attended the nightly services. It became one of the greatest spiritual revivals witnessed in Kerala. These meetings marked a historic milestone, laying the foundation for the growth and expansion of Sharon Fellowship Church.Through the efforts of the Bible Institute’s students and faculty, several new congregations were established in the areas surrounding Thiruvalla. Around the same time, a number of independent local churches also joined the Sharon fellowship.
By 1955, the fellowship had grown to include about twenty churches. Alongside Pastor P. J. Thomas, leaders such as Pastors J. Varghese, T. K. Thomas, P. K. Abraham, K. C. Cherian, P. V. Varghese, C. K. Joseph, K. T. Thomas, Sadhu John, K. C. Samuel, Mrs. Aleyamma Thomas, Mrs.Mary Mathew and Sister P. V. Saramma played significant roles in leading and developing the fellowship.
In 1957, the Sharon compound in Thiruvalla became the venue for another major revival meeting. This time, American missionaries Rev. A. A. Allen and Rev. Shambach led the services. Divine miracles and mighty works were reportedly manifested during these meetings. Lasting for several weeks, the revival strengthened the ministry of the then-young Sharon fellowship. Soon afterward, churches were established in various parts of Kerala.
Over the years, through the efforts of the leaders and workers whom God raised up for the church, the ministry expanded beyond Kerala to other parts of India and to foreign countries. Today, Sharon Fellowship Church has grown into one of the leading Pentecostal denominations.Following the long tenure of its founding president Pastor P. J. Thomas, Pastor T. G. Koshy assumed leadership of the church from 1988-2015. Pastor John Thomas served as president from 2015-2018 then served as International President from 2019-2023. He now gives leadership to the Bible college.
പാസ്റ്റർ പി. ജെ. തോമസ് (1915–1988)
പാസ്റ്റർ പി. ജെ. തോമസ് 1915 ഏപ്രിൽ 15-ന് മാവേലിക്കര പുത്തൻപുര–പൈനുംമൂട്ടിൽ കുടുംബത്തിൽ പാസ്റ്റർ പി. വി. ജോണിന്റെയും ശോശാമ്മയുടെയും മൂന്നാമത്തെ മകനായി ജനിച്ചു. ദൈവഭക്തിയുള്ള കുടുംബാന്തരീക്ഷത്തിൽ വളർന്ന അദ്ദേഹം, വിശുദ്ധ തിരുവെഴുത്തുകളോടുള്ള അഗാധമായ പ്രതിബദ്ധതയും സുവിശേഷവ്യാപനത്തോടുള്ള തീക്ഷ്ണമായ ഭാരവും പാരമ്പര്യമായി സ്വീകരിച്ചു.
പ്രാഥമിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ ശേഷം അദ്ദേഹം ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി എസ്.ബി. കോളേജിൽ ഇന്റർമീഡിയറ്റ് പഠനം നടത്തി. ക്രിസ്തീയ ശുശ്രൂഷയ്ക്കുള്ള ദൈവവിളി തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ അദ്ദേഹം ദൈവശാസ്ത്ര പഠനത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിച്ചു. കൊൽക്കത്തയിലെ സെറാമ്പൂർ കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് ലൈസൻഷ്യേറ്റ് ഇൻ തിയോളജി (L.Th.) ബിരുദവും, തുടർന്ന് ബെംഗളൂരുവിലെ യുണൈറ്റഡ് തിയോളജിക്കൽ കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് ബാച്ചിലർ ഓഫ് ഡിവിനിറ്റി (B.D.) ബിരുദവും നേടി. കൂടുതൽ ഫലപ്രദമായ ശുശ്രൂഷയ്ക്കായി സ്വയം ഒരുക്കുവാൻ അദ്ദേഹം 1946-ൽ ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയിലെ സിഡ്നി ബൈബിൾ കോളേജിൽ ഉപരിപഠനം നടത്തി. പിന്നീട് കാനഡയിലും അമേരിക്കയിലും ദൈവശാസ്ത്ര-മതപഠനങ്ങളിൽ ഉന്നതപഠനം തുടർന്നു. അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഇല്ലിനോയിസിലുള്ള വീറ്റൺ കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് മാസ്റ്റർ ഓഫ് റിലീജിയസ് എജ്യുക്കേഷൻ (M.R.E.), മാസ്റ്റർ ഓഫ് ആർട്സ് (M.A.) ബിരുദങ്ങൾ കരസ്ഥമാക്കി. വീറ്റൺ കോളേജിന്റെ പ്രസിഡന്റ് വി. എഡ്മണ്ട് റെയ്മണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് തിയോളജിക്കൽ ഫെല്ലോഷിപ്പ് അനുവദിക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് കോളേജിൽ അധ്യാപകനായി നിയമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ദൈവശാസ്ത്ര വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിനും ക്രിസ്തീയ ശുശ്രൂഷയ്ക്കും നൽകിയ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ സംഭാവനകളെ മാനിച്ച് പിന്നീട് പിറ്റ്സ്ബർഗിലെ ഒരു സെമിനാരി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഓണററി ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ് നൽകി ആദരിച്ചു.
1944 ജൂലൈ 6-ന് പാസ്റ്റർ പി. ജെ. തോമസ് മല്ലപ്പള്ളി മാടത്തിൽമേപ്രത്ത് കുടുംബാംഗമായ ഏലിയാമ്മയെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു. ഈ ദാമ്പത്യജീവിതം ശുശ്രൂഷയിലെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ ഒരു കൂട്ടായ്മയായി മാറി. ഇരുവരും കർത്താവിനോടുള്ള അചഞ്ചലമായ സമർപ്പണത്തോടെ ജീവിതം നയിച്ചു. അതിഥിസൽക്കാരത്തിലൂടെയും പ്രാർത്ഥനയിലൂടെയും ശ്രീമതി ഏലിയാമ്മ തോമസ് തന്റെ ഭർത്താവിന്റെ ദർശനത്തെ വിശ്വസ്തതയോടെ പിന്തുണച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ശുശ്രൂഷയിലെ ഒഴിച്ചുകൂടാനാകാത്ത സഹപ്രവർത്തകയായി മാറി.
1953 മാർച്ചിൽ പാസ്റ്റർ പി. ജെ. തോമസ് ദൈവശാസ്ത്ര വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിന്റെയും സ്വദേശീയ സഭാസ്ഥാപനത്തിന്റെയും വ്യക്തമായ ദർശനത്തോടെ ഇന്ത്യയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയെത്തി. തിരുവല്ല നഗരഹൃദയത്തിൽ ഒരു ഭവനം വാങ്ങി, അതിനെ വളർന്നുവരുന്ന ശുശ്രൂഷയുടെ കേന്ദ്രമാക്കി. ആ ഭവനത്തിൽ നിന്നാരംഭിച്ച് പാസ്റ്ററും ശ്രീമതി തോമസും ചേർന്ന് ശാരോൻ ബൈബിൾ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് അത് ഇന്നത്തെ ശാരോൻ ബൈബിൾ കോളേജായി വളർന്നു. അവരുടെ ഭവനം പ്രാർത്ഥനയുടെയും വചനപഠനത്തിന്റെയും നേതൃപരിശീലനത്തിന്റെയും ക്രിസ്തീയ കൂട്ടായ്മയുടെയും കേന്ദ്രമായി മാറി. അധികം വൈകാതെ അധ്യാപകരും വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും പ്രാദേശിക വിശ്വാസികളും ശാരോൻ കോമ്പൗണ്ടിൽ പതിവായി ആരാധനയ്ക്കായി ഒരുമിച്ചുകൂടാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ഈ ആത്മീയ കൂട്ടായ്മ അതിവേഗം വളർന്ന്, ആ വർഷാവസാനത്തോടെ ശാരോൻ ഫെലോഷിപ്പ് ചർച്ച് എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ഈ എളിയ തുടക്കം പിന്നീട് സഭാസ്ഥാപനം, ദൈവശാസ്ത്ര വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, മിഷൻ പ്രവർത്തനം, സുവിശേഷവ്യാപനം എന്നിവയിലൂടെ ഇന്ത്യയിലുടനീളവും അനേകം രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കും വ്യാപിച്ചു.
പാസ്റ്റർ പി. ജെ. തോമസിനും ശ്രീമതി ഏലിയാമ്മ തോമസിനും രണ്ട് പുത്രന്മാർ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു — ജോൺ തോമസും, പരേതനായ കുര്യൻ തോമസും.
വിശ്വസ്തമായ ജീവിതശുശ്രൂഷയിലൂടെയും ആഴമുള്ള ദൈവശാസ്ത്ര പാണ്ഡിത്യത്തിലൂടെയും പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലുള്ള ആത്മീയ നേത്യത്വത്തിലൂടെയും പാസ്റ്റർ പി. ജെ. തോമസ് മായാത്ത ഒരു പാരമ്പര്യം സഭയ്ക്കു സമ്മാനിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ദർശനം ഇന്നും ശാരോൻ ബൈബിൾ കോളേജിലെ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെയും ശാരോൻ ഫെലോഷിപ്പ് ചർച്ചിലെ അനേകം ശുശ്രൂഷകരെയും സ്വാധീനിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ദൈവരാജ്യത്തിന്റെ വ്യാപനത്തിനായി ദാസനേതാക്കളെ എഴുന്നേൽപ്പിക്കുന്നതിൽ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ വിശ്വസ്തതയുടെ ഉജ്ജ്വല സാക്ഷ്യമായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതവും പ്രവർത്തനവും ഇന്നും നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു.
ശാരോൻ ഫെലോഷിപ്പ് ചർച്ച്
ഉന്നത ദൈവശാസ്ത്ര വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ഇല്ലിനോയിയിലെ വീറ്റൺ കോളേജിൽ പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ ശേഷം, അവിടെ താരതമ്യ മതപഠനം പഠിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന പാസ്റ്റർ പി. ജെ. തോമസ് 1953 മാർച്ചിൽ ഇന്ത്യയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയെത്തി. തിരുവല്ലയുടെ ഹൃദയഭാഗത്ത് ഒരു വാസസ്ഥലം വാങ്ങി, ബൈബിൾ കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് ബിരുദം നേടിയിരുന്ന ഭാര്യ അച്ചാമ്മയോടൊപ്പം അവിടെ താമസമാക്കി. അവരുടെ ഭവനത്തിൽ അവർ ശാരോൻ ബൈബിൾ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് എന്ന പേരിൽ ഒരു ചെറിയ ബൈബിൾ പരിശീലന പരിപാടി ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഇന്ന് ഇത് ശാരോൻ ബൈബിൾ കോളേജ് എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. സുവിശേഷത്തിന്റെ സദ്വാർത്ത പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുക എന്ന അവരുടെ ദർശനമായിരുന്നു ഈ സംരംഭത്തിന്റെ പ്രേരകശക്തി.
ബൈബിൾ സ്കൂളിലെ അധ്യാപകരും വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും ഏതാനും പ്രദേശവാസികളും ചേർന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ സഭയും ചില സ്വതന്ത്ര സഭകളും ശാരോൻ കോമ്പൗണ്ടിൽ യോഗം ചേരാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ഇതാണ് പിന്നീട് ശാരോൻ ഫെല്ലോഷിപ്പ് ചർച്ച് എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ട സഭാ പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കം.
അതേ വർഷം ഡിസംബറിൽ, അമേരിക്കൻ മിഷനറിയായ റവ. എം. എ. ദാവൂദ്യും ഭാര്യയും തിരുവല്ലയിൽ എത്തി. തിരുവല്ലയ്ക്കടുത്തുള്ള പായിപ്പാട്ടിലുള്ള അവരുടെ സുഹൃത്തിനെ സന്ദർശിച്ചതിന് ശേഷം അവർ പാസ്റ്റർ പി. ജെ. തോമസുമായി പരിചയപ്പെട്ടു. തിരുവല്ലയിൽ ഉണർവ് യോഗങ്ങൾ സംഘടിപ്പിക്കണമെന്ന ആത്മീയഭാരം അവർ പാസ്റ്റർ തോമസുമായി പങ്കുവച്ചു. അന്ന് വൈകുന്നേരം തന്നെ ശാരോൻ കോമ്പൗണ്ടിൽ യോഗങ്ങൾ ആരംഭിച്ചു. അധ്യാപകരും വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും ഉൾപ്പെടെ ഏകദേശം അമ്പതുപേർ ആദ്യ യോഗത്തിൽ പങ്കെടുത്തു. ആദ്യ യോഗം മുതൽ തന്നെ പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിന്റെ ശക്തമായ പ്രവർത്തനം അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടതിനാൽ, യോഗങ്ങൾ ഏതാനും ദിവസങ്ങൾ കൂടി തുടരാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. ഓരോ ദിവസവും ഈ യോഗങ്ങളിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നവരുടെ എണ്ണം വർധിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.
പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നവരുടെ എണ്ണം ലഭ്യമായ സ്ഥലത്തെക്കാൾ വർധിച്ചതോടെ, ജനക്കൂട്ടത്തെ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നതിനായി ശാരോൻ കോമ്പൗണ്ടിനുള്ളിൽ ഒരു വലിയ കൂടാരം സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. ഈ 23 ദിവസത്തെ ഉണർവ് യോഗങ്ങളുടെ അവസാന ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ, ഓരോ രാത്രിയിലെയും യോഗങ്ങളിൽ 80,000-ത്തിലധികം ആളുകൾ പങ്കെടുത്തു. കേരളം സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിച്ച ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ആത്മീയ ഉണർവുകളിൽ ഒന്നായി ഇത് മാറി. ഈ യോഗങ്ങൾ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഒരു സുപ്രധാന നാഴികക്കല്ലായി മാറുകയും, ശാരോൻ ഫെല്ലോഷിപ്പ് ചർച്ചിന്റെ വളർച്ചയ്ക്കും വ്യാപനത്തിനും അടിത്തറ പാകുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ബൈബിൾ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിലെ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെയും അധ്യാപകരുടെയും പ്രവർത്തനഫലമായി തിരുവല്ലയുടെ സമീപപ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിരവധി പുതിയ സഭകൾ സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഇതേ കാലയളവിൽ, നിരവധി സ്വതന്ത്ര പ്രാദേശിക സഭകളും ശാരോൻ ഫെല്ലോഷിപ്പുമായി ചേർന്നു.
1955-ഓടെ, ഫെല്ലോഷിപ്പിൽ ഏകദേശം ഇരുപത് സഭകൾ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടു. പാസ്റ്റർ പി. ജെ. തോമസിനോടൊപ്പം പാസ്റ്റർമാരായ ജെ. വർഗീസ്, ടി. കെ. തോമസ്, പി. കെ. അബ്രഹാം, കെ. സി. ചെറിയാൻ, പി. വി. വർഗീസ്, സി. കെ. ജോസഫ്, കെ. ടി. തോമസ്, സാധു ജോൺ, കെ. സി. സാമുവൽ, ശ്രീമതി അച്ചാമ്മ തോമസ്, ശ്രീമതി മേരി മാത്യു, സിസ്റ്റർ പി. വി. സാറാമ്മ എന്നിവർ ഫെല്ലോഷിപ്പിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലും വളർച്ചയിലും നിർണായക പങ്കുവഹിച്ചു.
1957-ൽ, തിരുവല്ലയിലെ ശാരോൻ കോമ്പൗണ്ട് മറ്റൊരു വലിയ ഉണർവ് യോഗത്തിന് വേദിയായി. ഇത്തവണ അമേരിക്കൻ മിഷനറിമാരായ റവ. എ. എ. അലനും റവ. ഷാംബാക്കും യോഗങ്ങൾക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നൽകി. ഈ യോഗങ്ങളിൽ ദൈവിക അത്ഭുതങ്ങളും ശക്തമായ ദൈവപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളും പ്രകടമായതായി റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു. നിരവധി ആഴ്ചകൾ നീണ്ടുനിന്ന ഈ ഉണർവ് അന്നത്തെ യുവമായിരുന്ന ശാരോൻ ഫെല്ലോഷിപ്പിന്റെ ശുശ്രൂഷയെ കൂടുതൽ ശക്തിപ്പെടുത്തി. താമസിയാതെ കേരളത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ സഭകൾ സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
കാലക്രമേണ, ദൈവം സഭയ്ക്കായി എഴുന്നേൽപ്പിച്ച നേതാക്കളുടെയും പ്രവർത്തകരുടെയും പരിശ്രമങ്ങളിലൂടെ ഈ ശുശ്രൂഷ കേരളത്തിനപ്പുറം ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മറ്റു ഭാഗങ്ങളിലേക്കും വിദേശ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കും വ്യാപിച്ചു. ഇന്ന് ശാരോൻ ഫെല്ലോഷിപ്പ് ചർച്ച് പ്രമുഖ പെന്തെക്കോസ്ത് സഭാവിഭാഗങ്ങളിലൊന്നായി വളർന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.
സ്ഥാപക പ്രസിഡന്റായിരുന്ന പാസ്റ്റർ പി. ജെ. തോമസിന്റെ ദീർഘകാല നേതൃത്വത്തിന് ശേഷം, 1988 മുതൽ 2015 വരെ പാസ്റ്റർ ടി. ജി. കോശി സഭയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. പാസ്റ്റർ ജോൺ തോമസ് 2015 മുതൽ 2018 വരെ പ്രസിഡന്റായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് 2019 മുതൽ 2023 വരെ ഇന്റർനാഷണൽ പ്രസിഡന്റായി സേവനം ചെയ്തു. നിലവിൽ അദ്ദേഹം ബൈബിൾ കോളേജിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു.
