Jharkhand

Jharkhand is a mineral-rich state located in eastern India. It was formed on 15 November 2000 after being separated from Bihar. The capital city is Ranchi, and the state is known for its forests, waterfalls, tribal heritage, coal mines, iron ore, and industrial centers. Jharkhand plays a major role in India’s mining and steel industries.

State Size and Population

Jharkhand covers an area of approximately 79,714 square kilometers. The state has an estimated population of around 4.1 to 4.2 crore people in 2026. Many people live in rural villages, forest regions, and tribal communities. A significant portion of the population belongs to Scheduled Tribes, making Jharkhand one of India’s major tribal states.

Religion and People

Jharkhand is culturally diverse with many tribal traditions and languages. According to census-based estimates:

• Hindus – approximately 67.8%
• Muslims – approximately 14.5%
• Christians – approximately 4.3%
• Other religions and tribal faiths (including Sarna traditions) – approximately 13%

Many tribal communities follow Sarna and other indigenous faith traditions connected to nature and ancestral worship. Recent discussions in the state have focused on preserving tribal religious identity through a separate Sarna religious code.

Economic Status

Jharkhand is one of India’s richest states in natural resources. It has large reserves of coal, iron ore, copper, uranium, and bauxite. Major industries include mining, steel production, power generation, and manufacturing. Cities like Jamshedpur, Bokaro, and Dhanbad are important industrial centers.

However, despite its natural wealth, many people still face poverty, unemployment, lack of education, and inadequate healthcare, especially in tribal and rural areas. Some regions struggle with social inequality and underdevelopment.

The state government is also trying to diversify the economy beyond mining by encouraging manufacturing, investment, infrastructure, and job creation.

The current Chief Minister of Jharkhand is Hemant Soren. He has been serving since July 2024.
