Overview

Mizoram, known as the “Land of the Hill People,” is one of the most peaceful and scenic states in northeastern India. It became the 23rd state of India on 20 February 1987 after the historic Mizoram Peace Accord. The state is characterized by rolling hills, deep valleys, lush forests, and a strong sense of community among its people. Its capital city is Aizawl, which serves as the administrative, educational, and cultural center of the state.

Population and People

The majority of the population belongs to various Mizo tribes, known for their rich cultural heritage, strong family values, hospitality, and high literacy rate. Mizoram is among the most literate states in India, with education playing a significant role in society. Religious Composition

Mizoram is one of the few Indian states where Christianity is the overwhelming majority religion.

Mizoram has a developing economy based primarily on agriculture, horticulture, bamboo cultivation, forestry, and government services. Traditional shifting cultivation (jhum farming) has gradually been supplemented by modern horticulture and commercial farming. The service sector and public administration contribute substantially to the state’s economy, while cross-border trade with Myanmar and Bangladesh offers growing economic opportunities.

Despite significant improvements in infrastructure and income levels, employment opportunities remain limited, leading many young people to seek jobs outside the state. Tourism, bamboo industries, handloom products, and food processing are emerging sectors with considerable growth potential.
